By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 01:30 a.m. HST, Jan 25, 2014

Although the current swell is almost spent, another approaching large northwest swell expected to arrive late Friday afternoon has prompted officials at the National Weather Service to extend a high surf warning until 6 a.m. today.

A high surf warning is in effect for the northern beaches of Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Molokai and Niihau and the west shores of Oahu, Kauai, Molokai and Niihau.

Surf was expected to peak late Friday afternoon through Friday night with the west-facing shores of Oahu and Molokai expected to see waves of up to 15 to 20 feet. However, weather officials forecast waves of up to 20 to 30 feet for the other shores covered in the warning.

The surf is expected to slowly decrease today, forecasters said.

Waimea Bay Beach Park and Yokohama Bay were reopened Friday.

Weather officials advised beachgoers of shorebreak and dangerous currents that could make entering the water at affected beaches very hazardous.
