Toyota recalls 1.9 million Prius cars for software

TOKYO » Toyota is recalling 1.9 million hybrid Prius cars globally for a software glitch that could cause the vehicle to stall.

Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday that 997,000 Prius cars in Japan, some 713,000 in North America, another 130,000 in Europe and the rest in other regions are being recalled for a problem in the software to control the hybrid system.

No accidents or injuries have been reported related to the problem.

The software could cause transistors to become damaged, causing warnings lights to go off, driving power to be reduced or the car to stop. The recalled vehicles were manufactured between March 2009 and February 2014.

The Japanese automaker suffered massive recalls starting in 2009, affecting more than 14 million vehicles for problems including floor mats, gas pedals and brakes.

Just one of the many reasons I no longer consider Toyota/Lexus products anymore.
Much like everything else that is Japan, Inc. (Sony, Olympus, Sharp, Panasonic, Sanyo), Japan has lost their edge, and is being run over by companies like Apple, Google, and Samsung.
People who still believe in them, are old fashioned, and probably still shop at Sears, and have a HawaiianTel landline.

actually, they recall if they find a problem or think they found a problem. U.S manufactures just let the defects go.

Exactly - recalls are very good things for consumers. Every car ends up having glitches. with the recall, you don't have to fight the dealer to get the service done without cost to you. Some manufacturers, you literally have to raise the middle finger and attempt to take the dealer to court to get a defect replaced. Kudos to Toyota.

Just one of the many reasons I do own a Toyota. They take responsibility. American car makers have a reputation for keeping quiet and hiding problems. They seem to not take any action until someone dies and they get sued.

Toyota and Honda cars still are rated at or near the top.
