CHARLESTON, W.Va. » A West Virginia pizza restaurant has been shut down after a district manager was caught on surveillance video urinating into a sink.

Pizza Hut Corp. spokesman Doug Terfehr said Wednesday the company was made aware of the video Tuesday and fired the employee shortly thereafter. The restaurant in Kermit, about 85 miles southwest of Charleston, was then closed indefinitely.

The video dated Jan. 29 shows the manager urinating in a metal sink in a food preparation area. The incident occurred after business hours.

The restaurant is owned by Wichita, Kan.-based Rage Inc. The company's website says it owns Pizza Huts in seven states. In West Virginia, it also has locations in Ceredo, Chapmanville, Danville and two in Logan.

Rage referred questions to Terfehr, who issued a statement saying the company was "embarrassed by the actions of this individual."

The employee's name wasn't released.

"Pizza Hut has zero tolerance for violations of our operating standards, and the local owner of the restaurant took immediate action and terminated the employee involved," the statement said. "While the isolated incident occurred during non-business hours and did not involve any food tampering, we follow strict safety and handling procedures and the restaurant has since been closed. We apologize to our customers of Kermit, West Virginia and those in our system who have been let down by this situation."

Mingo County health official Brett Vance said the company is overseeing the restaurant's cleaning. A health department notice posted on the restaurant's door said conditions in the restaurant constituted a substantial public health hazard.

The video and firing were first reported by WOWK-TV.

Works really well, because the sink has the right height, but should only be done in the privacy of one's own home.

I wonder WHO within that organization has enough time on their hands to sit and randomly check routine security video footage to "catch" the perpetrator in the act without a specific complaint of time/place. More likely, someone SAW the act being committed and security footage was searched and used later to corroborate the claim. I doubt the manager was "caught" urinating in the sink, but was "discovered" later to have done so by reviewing security video.

Based on this case, about 90% or more of restaurants out there should be shut down. But most of them are smart enough to NOT point a camera at their own workplaces and then let the video out.

Yes, this was a terrible thing to do, but it is no worse than employees getting urine or feces on their hands while using a restroom and returning to work without washing their hands which is very common. Unfortunately, employees do it with impunity because cameras are not permitted in restroom to catch their unsanitary habits

You would think a manager would know where the video cameras are.

See my comment above. Nobody would have reviewed the video unless he was either "caught in the act" or left "residual evidence".

Normally your olfactory senses can detect the "residual" evidence -- just ask the residence of Chinatown.

I worked at restaurants as a teenager in high school. You have no idea what goes on behind the scenes..................they will remodel the Pizza Hut with new everything and reopen. I suppose the sink was nasty......however, the toilet was nice and clean.
