APALACHIN, N.Y. » The State University of New York's Broome Community College is planning drug awareness programs in the wake of a professor's death from a heroin overdose.

The Binghamton Press-Republican reports that 49-year-old professor Wesley Warren died around 2 a.m. Feb. 9 after snorting heroin with a friend at his house in Apalachin. The newspaper obtained records on the incident from the Tioga County Sheriff's Department through a Freedom of Information Law request.

Warren had served as chairman of the community college's Criminal Justice and Homeland Security program. He also was a former police officer and New York state-certified criminal investigator.

SUNY Broome President Kevin Drumm said the college will put more focus on the problem exposed by the tragedy.

This is what the war in Afghanistan has left us. Cheap, stronger heroin. Al Quaida makes sure it gets to the US. During out time there, we funded poppy growing and now it's coming back to haunt us.

It’s unfortunate that the one thing that is killing us at home from Afghanistan is the one thing the U.S. government tacitly supported by sweeping out the Taliban. And the one guy that the U.S. government put ALL the blame on for 9/11 — Osama Bin Laden — is the one guy that the U.S. government (CIA) put into power to lead the Mujahideen to victory by driving out the Russians from the Afghani homeland in the 1980s (and therefore a HERO to the people of Afghanistan).

Ahh, the irony.

He's supposed to inject it, not snort it. That's his big mistake.
