KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia » A lawyer says a Malaysian couple have been sentenced to death by hanging for murdering their 26-year-old Indonesian maid three years ago.

Defense lawyer Thong Seng Kong said Friday that the High Court had ruled a day earlier that Fong Kong Meng, 58, and his wife Teoh Ching Yen, 56, were guilty of killing Isti Komariyah by failing to provide food and medical treatment.

Isti, who worked for the couple for nearly two years, was declared dead after being taken to a hospital in June 2011. Prosecutors said she weighed only 57 pounds and had bruises and scratch marks on her body.

Thong says the couple are expected to appeal the sentence.

I know what you mean. Dozens of maids have been tortured to death all over Hawaii. Or maybe you actually know something? BTW, buddy, the US has about 5% of the world population and we have 25% of the world's prisoners. Are we 5 times worse than the rest of the world? But guys like you want to imprison more. Why?

Factor in the number of illegal aliens in our prison system (undocumented immigrants for all you politically correct weirdos), which is around 25% and you should see where our problems are. Other countries have lower incarceration percentages because there doesn't seem to be much of an incentive for them to migrate (illegally) to those countries. Face it, America is the best country on the planet but we've created a nanny/entitlement society that lacks personal responsibility.

The big problem is a some of those convicted and put to death were actually innocent, so if later they find evidence that clears the person, there's no way to reverse the punishment. Lots of prisoners in the mainland have been put to death when they couldn't afford to hire a decent lawyer to defend them.

I've never heard of a "decent lawyer". I have heard of defense lawyers who will say anything, fact or fiction, to get their client off. (So they can collect their fee).
