Civil unions bill on governor's list of potential vetoes

By Star-Advertiser Staff

POSTED:

Gov. Linda Lingle said today that a civil-unions bill is on her list of potential vetoes.

"I haven't made up my mind yet," Lingle said.

Lingle now has 10 working days -- or until July 6 -- to sign, veto or allow the bill to become law without her signature.

The bill would give same-sex and heterosexual couples the ability to enter into civil unions and receive the same rights, benefits and responsibilities as marriage under state law.

The civil-unions bill is one of 39 bills on the potential veto list. Lingle, or Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona, have vetoed 15 bills this year. Eleven of those vetoes have been overriden by the state Legislature.
