A nonconference game on Maui vs. Chicago State and a road game vs. BYU at the Utah Jazz's EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City highlight the Hawaii men's basketball 2010-11 schedule.
The Rainbow Warriors will play 17 games at the Stan Sheriff Center in Gib Arnold's first season as coach: the usual eight Western Athletic Conference home games; three each in the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic and Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic; and singular matchups against Central Arkansas, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and likely a local Division II opponent to be announced.
After an exhibition on Nov. 6, the season opener is Nov. 12 vs. Montana State in the round robin-style Rainbow Classic. Matchups with Cal State Fullerton (Nov. 13) and Central Michigan (Nov. 15) follow.
Besides the BYU road game (Dec. 4), UH plays nonconference road games at Cal Poly (Dec. 1) and in the ESPNU BracketBusters event (Feb. 19).
UH plays Chicago State on Dec. 17 at the Lahaina Civic Center on Maui. It's the team's first neighbor island game in seven years.
"I'm pleased we'll be bringing our basketball team to Maui, especially in light of the canceled men's volleyball game due to the tsunami," UH athletic director Jim Donovan said in a release. "It'll be a good opportunity for our team and certainly something special for our Maui fans. I'd like to thank Mayor Charmaine Tavares' office as well as Sen. Shan Tsutsui and Rep. Kyle Yamashita for their assistance in making this game possible."
UH's WAC season opens Dec. 29 with a two-game road trip to Utah State and Nevada, and closes with a road swing through San Jose State and Fresno State prior to the WAC tournament (March 9 to 12) in Las Vegas.
Pairings for the second Diamond Head Classic (Dec. 22 to 25) haven't yet been announced, but the field will feature several talented teams in Butler, Baylor, Mississippi State, Florida State, Utah, San Diego and Washington State.
