Former Hawaii PTSA treasurer sentenced for $34,000 theft

A forner Hawaii State Parent Teacher Association treasurer took trips and paid off his credit card debt with nearly $34,000 in stolen PTSA funds over two years
Michael J. Nathan, who has been active with two other nonprofit organizations and runs a Maui accounting company, was sentenced yesterday to 30 days in jail to be served on weekends.
Maui Circuit Judge Richard Bissen sentenced the 60-year-old Wailuku man to five years' probation, a $5,000 fine and 500 hours of community service.
The judge ordered Nathan to pay $33,963.32 in restitution and to write a letter of apology to the PTSA.
Nathan pleaded no contest on April 21 to first-degree theft and six counts of second-degree forgery.
A Department of the Attorney General investigation revealed Nathan had used the organization's funds to pay off his credit cards and pay for interisland and California trips he took with his son.
