Big Island brush fire burns 2,000 acres

POHAKULOA TRAINING AREA, Hawaii >> The Army says a wildfire has burned 2,000 acres at Pohakuloa Training Area on the Big Island.
U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii said yesterday the fire on the slopes of Mauna Kea volcano has been about 55 percent contained.
Three civilian contracted helicopters battled the blaze while five bulldozers cut firebreaks.
Sixty-six firefighters from the Army, Hawaii County, the National Park Service and the state Forestry Division doused flames.
The fire began yesterday morning near Mauna Kea State Park. No Army training was taking place in the area at the time.
The Big Island is suffering from severe drought. The state closed a forest reserve and game management in June citing extreme fire danger.
