Groundbreaking for Hilo Hawaiian language college

HONOLULU (AP) — The University of Hawaii at Hilo has broken ground on a new facility for the Ka Haka Ula O Keelikolani College of Hawaiian Language.
Ceremonies last weekend included Hawaiian language welcoming remarks and prayer. There was also a genealogical presentation of native speakers who have taught Hawaiian language at UH Hilo and Hawaii Community College since 1960.
The college’s operations are currently spread out over five locations on campus. Some faculty and staff have to share office space with up to 16 people.
The university has long recognized the need for new facilities for the college, but the project took a major step forward after the state Legislature last year approved $28 million for building’s construction.
The college produced the first master’s and doctorate degree recipients at UH-Hilo.
