Hawaii’s unemployment rate was 6.4 percent in August, unchanged from July, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

July’s 6.4 percent rate was revised upward from the previous estimate of 6.3 percent reported by the BLS last month.

Hawaii’s jobless rate was 6th lowest in the nation, ahead of Kansas at 6.6 percent and behind Vermont at 6 percent.

Hawaii’s total workforce rose to 635,100 in August from 634,800 in July, while the number of unemployed rose to 40,900 from 40,400.

The workforce and unemployment data are gathered from a telephone survey of households. A separate survey of businesses showed that nonfarm payroll jobs fell by 6,300 in August.
