Flash flood watch in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday

By Star-Advertiser Staff

LAST UPDATED: 02:50 a.m. HST, Mar 05, 2011

The threat of heavy showers exists for the smaller Hawaiian Islands.

A flash flood watch remains in effect through 6 a.m. Saturday for all islands except the Big Island.

Other than for the summits of the Big Island and Maui, no strong gusts are expected at lower elevations.

The National Weather Service recorded gusts of 51 mph at 3:26 a.m. today at Kalaeloa and also at 3:54 a.m. in Kaneohe.

The weather will transition Saturday into tradewind weather as the front bringing the inclement weather weakens and drifts between Maui and the Big Island, said Tom Birchard, lead forecaster for the weather service.

Maui can expect “not very windy, but still soupy, cloudy and showery” weather tonight through tomorrow, he said.

The Big Island won’t see much until Sunday with just some increased showers on the north and east sides of the island.
