Magnitude-6.2 earthquake strikes Japan; no tsunami

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck 24 miles south of Shizuoka, Honshu, in Japan, the U.S. Geological Survey said. No tsunami warnings were issued.

The quake struck just before midnight in Japan (4:58 a.m. Hawaii time) and was centered six miles underground. Shizuoka is about 103 miles southwest of Tokyo, near Mt. Fuji.

There were no reports of serious damage or injuries.
