A 22-year-old man was in critical condition this morning after crashing his pickup truck into a concrete freeway support pillar under the airport viaduct at 4:45 a.m., police said.
The accident happened in the ewa-bound lanes of Kamehameha Highway just before Valkenburgh Street. Police said speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash in the median between Kamehameha and Nimitz highways.
A city ambulance crew was behind the 1981 Ford pickup truck and was first on scene, an Emergency Medical Service supervisor said.
The man was not wearing a seatbelt and suffered head and chest injuries, police said.
