LAST UPDATED: 05:11 a.m. HST, Mar 11, 2011

City employees not on emergency duty, state employees not on furlough and emergency duty and federal court and bankruptcy court employees do not have to report to work today.

Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle announced that city employees not on disaster duty are to stay home today because of the tsunami.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie also said state nonemergency workers who aren't on job furlough today won't have to go to work.

Federal court and bankruptcy court employees are also being told not to report to work.

Carlisle said he has to ensure people are safe and as a result of that "the City and County of Honolulu non-disaster response employees are placed on administrative leave for tomorrow and are asked to stay home."

He said hospitals were getting an influx of people who don't have acute medical problems seeking shelter. Hospitals don't have resources for those seeking shelter and it strains resources for those with medical emergencies. Residents should go to the home of a relative or friend or a designated tsunami evacuation area.
