Police arrest suspect in mini-mart crime spree

Police say a 47-year-old Pearl City man is responsible for four robberies of mini-marts and gas stations between Nov. 7 and Dec. 3 in which a handgun was used to threaten the cashier.

Police arrested Joseph Mookini at his Pearl City home Tuesday in connection with the robbery of a 7-Eleven store on Waialae and 2nd avenues. on Nov. 24.

Police issued a CrimeStoppers alert, including a security camera picture of the robber.

Police believe the crime spree began at about 5:20 p.m. on Nov. 7 when a man with a gun robbed the 76 gas station at 825 Kamehameha Highway in Pearl City.

Police released security camera photos of the robber in the Pearl City and Kaimuki robberies. In both photos, the suspect was wearing a baseball cap, t-shirt and sunglasses.

Mookini is also suspected in the robbery of the Dillingham Tesoro station and the Island Mini Mart on Kapahulu Avenue on Dec. 3.

Police said Mookini was positively identified in each of the robberies. He is 5 feet 8 and 240 pounds.

Police and CrimeStoppers issued a news release thanking the public for its help in catching Mookini.

He remained in the police cellblock this morning pending charges.
