Kale Ane promised, sort of, that his Punahou Buffanblu would have a new wrinkle or two for defending state champion Saint Louis.
Little did he know how well it would work. Punahou, using a new variation of its pistol formation, churned out 102 rushing yards against one of the top defenses in the state and pulled off a surprisingly easy 35-0 win over Saint Louis Friday night at Aloha Stadium.
Sophomore Larry Tuileta tossed two touchdown passes and running back Steven Lakalaka rumbled for 72 hard-earned yards and two touchdowns as Punahou improved to 2-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (4-1 overall). Saint Louis dropped to 0-2 in league play (4-2 overall).
It was a stunning win for the sixth-ranked Buffanblu, who stumbled in nonconference play against Campbell, but have been powerful since. They’ve notched wins over California power Vista, and now, a victory over No. 4 Saint Louis.
