Two hikers trapped in the Koolaus by cloudy weather overnight were located by fire rescue personnel this morning.

One of the hikers, a man in his mid-20s, was rescued off the ridgeline leading to the Konahuanui peak of the Koolau mountain range at 7 a.m. after he called the fire department with his cell phone.

The fire department helicopter lifted him off the ridge above Nuuanu Valley. He suffered no apparent injuries, but was taken to a local hospital for observation, said Fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

Two hours later his hiking companion, a man also in his mid-20s, called the fire department using a cell phone he borrowed from another hiker near the trail head to Kalawahine Trail which leads to Tantalus. Fire rescue personnel met him at the trail head in Makiki.

The two began hiking 2 p.m. yesterday near the hairpin turn on the Pali Highway and were not on a trail, but simply following the ridgeline to Konahuanui. They said they had originally intended to hike to Pauoa Flats near Tantalus.

One man called for help at about 5:40 p.m. to say his hiking partner, who had no cell phone, went ahead and left him behind.

Low clouds hindered yesterday's search efforts.
