Teacher furlough protesters to be sentenced

The four adults arrested for protesting school furlough days in Gov. Linda Lingle's office are being sentenced in Honolulu District Court today.
The four, among 20 demonstrators who received citations for the protest, were to be sentenced on misdemeanor trespassing charges.
The group conducted the sit-in over several days in hopes of convincing Lingle to end Hawaii's teacher furloughs that made last school year the shortest in the nation — 163 days instead of the normal 180 days. Money was later found to end teacher furloughs this school year.
Some of those arrested have accepted plea deals calling for community service, while others intend to plead no contest, according to the group Save Our Schools Hawaii.
