UH abandons attempt to add 13th football game for season

The University of Hawaii is resigned to playing a 12-game football season in 2012 after negotiations to add a 13th game ended.

"There was one school that we thought might come here. We gave them a deadline and that deadline has passed, so we're looking to play 12 games," UH athletic director Jim Donovan said today.

He identified the final candidate as Florida Atlantic.

Mountain West Conference members were due to submit their schedules this past Sunday. UH joins the MWC July 1, 2012.

UH said it was left in a lurch when Texas State pulled out of an apparent agreement in July and despite contacting several schools has been unable to find a fit for a maximum 13th game.

UH will play six road and six home games. As a result, it will need six victories to become bowl-eligible.

With the recent head coaching change, Donovan said he decided not to pursue what would be a school-record seventh road game and limited negotiations to home games.

The 13th game is a "gift" from the NCAA... If UH starts deciding not to use it the NCAA may take it away!

Good point. But in fairness to UH, the late and lame pullout by Texas State is the root cause. It's not that UH didn't want to play 13 games but in such a short time, it was hard to find a replacement. Making the extra game in Norm Chow's first year wouldn't be wise. Maybe if his new system was in place a year or two then yeah...could have tried another game on the road. I believe Chow even said he's fine with just 12-games in this next season.

a typical response of a "governmentally bureaucratic" metality! 1. - trying to hurredly fill a 13th game is a managerial/coaching distraction in an inaugural year, 2. - on the road would be an added and un-necessary expense to play an available D-II school(?), 3. - deadlines are deadlines, 4. - decisions made in haste to fulfill someone else's extertnal demands are never fruitful, 5. - as a season ticket holder, a 6/6 season ain't bad for getting a new program on solid foundation, (easier to build upon than to try to repair or retrench), 6. - the lack of a 13th game was not due to a lack of trying to fill it, so the ncaa would have no cause to take it away, as this season is unusual. finally - in the MWC for the first year, with a new coaching staff and new personnel and players, 6 games is easier than 7 to get to the hawaii bowl. what seems to be a challenge just might work out to be a boon. things do have a way of working out. keep the faith! think positive! Go, Warriors! it's Chow time!!!!

Theoretically it doesn't mean they can't get a 13th game. Just means they have to wait until the MW schedule comes out. Donavan would be silly to not at least attempt to get a 13th game after that is done.
