The public is advised to avoid waters fronting Wailupe Beach and the canal leading to the beach after a wastewater spill last night in Aina Haina.

More than 4,500 gallons of untreated wastewater was discharged from a manhole in Aina Haina where roots clogged an eight-inch clay pipe.

The health department was notified at 6 p.m. of the discharge from a manhole fronting 5231 Poola St. and stopped it by 8:30 p.m. By then, 4,500 gallons of untreated wastewater had leaked on to the street with 3,500 gals pouring into a storm drain which leads to Wailupe Beach. The remaining 1,000 gallons dissipating into the ground, the health department said. The affected area was cleaned, disinfected and deodorized.

The public is advised to stay out of the canal from Poola Street to the waters fronting Wailupe Beach park until warning signs have been removed.
