A winter storm brought snow to the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa Sunday and more snow is forecast to fall this afternoon and tonight..

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Hawaii island summits until 9 a.m. Tuesday because of snow, freezing rain and black ice on roads above 8,000 feet.

Snow is not expected this morning, but could fall this afternoon and tonight.

Forecasters say 1 to 2 inches fell overnight Saturday and drifts of 8 to 12 inches were reported at the summits Sunday morning.

Temperatures at the summits dropped into the low 20s Saturday night and are expected to be below freezing again today.

Forecasters say strong winds are also making travel to the summits hazardous.
