Hawaii Democratic Party Chairman Dante Carpenter says the party hopes that the dispute over who will be the next state speaker of the House can be settled by the Demo­cratic caucus internally, without seeking a coalition with House Republicans. He says neither he nor the party sides with either faction. A Page B1 story Thursday reported that Carpenter said the party was hopeful that some members of a Demo­cratic faction backing Rep. Joe Souki would ultimately back Calvin Say, the current speaker.
