Vote on banning fireworks postponed until Sept. 22

A final vote on a nearly complete fireworks ban on Oahu was put off until next month by the City Council yesterday.
The nine members, who appear to still be split on the issue after three hours of debate, said they now expect to take a vote at their Sept. 22 regular meeting.
The proposal would ban all consumer fireworks with a few exceptions. Special-use permits could be obtained for firecrackers only for special events. Up to 5,000 firecrackers could be purchased with a $25 permit. Aerial display fireworks put on by professionals would still be allowed.
Also yesterday, the Council approved a bill that would impose fines of up to $250 for putting bulky waste items on the curbside too early. The bill is designed to discourage people from putting sofas, refrigerators and other bulky trash onto the sidewalk prior to the night before a pickup day.
