By Rosemarie Bernardo

POSTED:

The 31-year-old Japanese visitor who was thrown off a 15-foot cliff in Kalalau on Kauai remains in critical condition at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, according to county spokeswoman Sarah Blane.

The victim's mother is on Kauai tending to her daughter's care and recovery, Sue Kanoho, executive director of the Kauai Visitors Bureau, said via email. The visitors bureau is providing assistance to the mother.

Deputy Consul General Kazunari Tanaka of the office of the Consulate General of Japan in Honolulu said the victim's family arrived in Hawaii from Japan Wednesday morning. A representative from the consulate accompanied the family to Kauai.

Police are searching for Justin Wynn Klein, 37, who allegedly threw the hiker off the cliff. He is described as a 6-foot-1 man with a brown Mohawk and possibly a moustache and a beard. He has a tribal band tattoo on his left arm. Klein's last known address is in Kilauea. He is considered dangerous and should not be approached.

Police received a call Sunday of an injured female hiker in need of medical assistance. She was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Police said the hiker was camping in Kalalau.

Access to the Kalalau Trail via the Kee Beach trailhead, the Na Pali Coast State Park and Haena State Park remain closed to the public until further notice.
