an estimated $350,000 in damage to a Mililani home the night before.
Channing Chandler and her sister-in-law were sleeping in the home and escaped without serious injury after they were awakened by the smell of smoke at their house at 94-326 Apele St., fire officials said. About 20 firefighters brought the fire under control at about 11:30 p.m. and extinguished the blaze at 1:40 a.m.

MAKING THE CUT | About 35 children were invited Tuesday to Masaharu Morimoto’s Morimoto Restaurant in Waikiki for a session with the Iron Chef on plating and presentation. Morimoto was a guest judge in last year’s Parents and Children Together’s annual Iron Chef competition, in which keiki from several housing projects competed for months leading up to a final contest in the tradition of Food Networks’ “Iron Chef.” Morimoto is getting a head start in this year’s event with a demonstration showing the kids how sashimi is prepared.

GOLDEN GAMES FOR GOLDEN YEARS | Karl Hall, 55, from Honolulu competed in the shot put under cloudy skies Tuesday at the University of Hawaii-Manoa track on the final day of competition for the National Veterans Golden Age Games. Hall’s best was 45 feet,
912 inches. The Golden Age Games is the world’s largest sports and recreational competition for veterans age 55 and older who receive health care at any VA medical facility. This year’s event drew more than 900 participants.
