The father of an 18-year-old woman whose nude body was found last summer near a public housing project in Kalihi is suing the city, the state, his daughter's accused killer and the martial arts organization that allegedly trained the accused killer.
Steven Rodrigues, father of Iris Rodrigues-Kaikana, filed a lawsuit in state court Tuesday against the city, the Hawaii Public Housing Authority, accused killer Corbit Ahn and the Mixed Martial Arts Academy.
A neighbor spotted Rodrigues-Kaikana's body in an alleyway next to Kamehameha Homes on Aug. 24. The Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office said she had been strangled.
Police arrested Ahn, 30, an amateur kickboxer, on charges of murder and sexual assault. His trial is scheduled for October.
Ahn is also scheduled to stand trial in October for second-degree assault for allegedly breaking a man's jaw in the man's Mililani home in January 2009.
He is also scheduled to go to trial this month on another second-degree assault charge, for allegedly beating and breaking the facial bones of a man at an apartment on Matlock Avenue last July.
Two state parks will close early on Sunday over concerns about fireworks, officials said today.
