Woman dies after crash

A 22-year-old California woman died Monday from injuries suffered when the pickup truck she was in ran off a road and dropped 50 feet into a Hilo rock quarry.

Christina L. Delgado of Santa Cruz, Calif., was a passenger in a blue 1992 Toyota pickup driven by her brother, a 26-year-old Keaau man, on Sunday. The truck was traveling south on a road leading to the Hilo landfill when the man lost control. The truck ran off the left side of the road and dropped about 50 feet down at the landfill at about 1:35 p.m.

The truck landed on its roof and pinned Delgado inside.

Her brother was able to free himself from the vehicle and go for help.

Fire Department personnel extricated the woman from the vehicle and took her to Hilo Medical Center. She was later flown to the Queen's Medical Center, where she died at 7:45 p.m. Monday.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, negligent injury and having no insurance. He was released pending further investigation and is hospitalized at Hilo Medical Center.

Hawaii County traffic enforcement unit officers have reclassified the negligent injury case to a negligent homicide investigation. An autopsy has been ordered.

Injured hiker is rescued

A 50-year-old Colorado Springs woman was airlifted from Hanakapiai Valley on Kauai on Tuesday afternoon after suffering an ankle injury.

The woman had been hiking on Kalalau Trail with her husband when she fell and injured her ankle.

The woman's husband hiked out to Kee Beach and reported the incident about 2:15 p.m. to county lifeguards, who, in turn, notified police dispatch.

Army burn scheduled

The Army will conduct a prescribed burn of 700 acres at the Schofield Barracks live-fire range June 9 to reduce the chance of wildfires. The burn had been scheduled for today, but was put off due to rain. June 16 is the backup date if another postponement is necessary. Air-monitoring results will be posted at
