Head injuries caused Marine’s death

Marine Luke Monahan died of multiple blunt force injuries from a fall, according to an autopsy Tuesday by the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office.

Other significant conditions and the manner of his death were deferred pending test results.

Monahan, 19, fell from an Ilima Hotel lanai Saturday morning and died at a hospital several hours later.

Spearfisher was Waimanalo resident

A man who died after spearfishing off Makapuu has been identified as 62-year-old Patrick Correa of Waimanalo, the city Medical Examiner’s Office said.

Correa was pulled ashore at about 1 p.m. Saturday near the restrooms at a beach called Baby Makapuu, across from Sea Life Park. He was taken to Castle Medical Center in critical condition and later died.

Man who assaulted girl is sought

Hawaii County police are looking for a man wanted in connection with the sexual assault of a girl on Oct. 1 in the Puna District.

Police said the assault occurred between 7 and 7:30 p.m. in Kurtistown.

Police said the man is described as “scruffy” looking, between 18 and 30 years old, 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall, 150 to 175 pounds, with a medium build, brown eyes, a short buzz cut, black hair and a dark complexion. He was last seen wearing a blue aloha shirt with blue hibiscus print, and driving a gold or light-colored four-door Honda or Mazda sedan.

Suspect allegedly damages police car

Police cited a 21-year-old Waianae man with trespassing and criminal property damage Monday after he allegedly damaged the rear window of a police car after his arrest for entering a Waianae home without permission.

Police arrested the man on Moua Street early Sunday morning for allegedly entering a 65-year-old man’s home without permission and put him in the back of a blue-and-white police car. Police said the man began kicking at the rear window of the car, damaging the frame, and was arrested for criminal property damage at about 3:10 a.m. Bail was set at $3,000.

Portlock home is damaged in blaze

Firefighters saved a $5 million home after a fire broke out Tuesday morning in Portlock.

The fire started at 8:53 a.m. in a cottage next door to a mansion at 1 Kokee Place, said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig. Firefighters used compressed-air foam to control the blaze in 10 minutes. One person at home in the cottage got out without injuries.

Seelig said the cottage had expensive furnishings and was heavily damaged. Damage was estimated at $600,000. The cause remains under investigation.

2 lost hikers rescued near Puu Oo vent

Hawaii County firefighters rescued a woman, 32, and a man, 28, from a forest near Kilauea volcano’s Puu Oo vent Monday.

The two hikers became disoriented Monday in the heavily forested area of Hawaii island’s Kahahaualea Natural Area Reserve in the area of the Puu Oo vent.

The hikers had wandered off the trail to the Puu Oo vent when they called county firefighters

on a cellphone at 4:40 p.m. They had strayed more than a half-mile southeast of the trail, the Fire Department said.

Using the Fire Department’s helicopter, a rescue party was flown in and cut a path to the lost hikers. Everyone walked out and there were no injuries.
