Victim dies after being hit by 2 vehicles

A Kahului resident was killed Sunday morning when two vehicles hit the victim on Honoapiilani Highway near Lahaina, Maui police said.

Police identified the victim as Failagi Vite Laloulu, 19.

Police said Laloulu was walking in the northbound lane of the highway and was hit by a northbound pickup truck at about 4:22 a.m. near Launiupoko Park.

The impact threw Laloulu into the southbound lane, where she was hit by an unidentified vehicle. The pickup truck's driver stopped, but the second vehicle did not, police said.

Police ask that anyone with information on this incident call the Traffic Division at 270-6537.

Rescuers help 3 hikers down from trails

Honolulu Fire Department rescue personnel responded to three calls Sunday to help hikers in distress.

In the first incident, reported at about 9:40 a.m., a woman injured her arm swinging on a rope while hiking on the Waiomao Falls Trail near Kaau Crater Loop in Palolo Valley. Rescuers initially planned to airlift the woman to safety but determined that she was fit to walk out with rescue personnel escorting her, a Fire Department spokesman said.

Shortly after noon, rescuers responded to an incident involving a 47-year-old woman who had injured her shoulder and ankle while hiking on the Manoa Falls Trail. An HFD helicopter airlifted her to Manoa District Park.

Just after 6 p.m., HFD personnel were called to Kokokahi Place in Kaneohe to assist a pair of hikers who became lost along the Oneawa Trail on their way toward a spot known as Friendship Garden. The hikers told rescuers they had followed trail markers but got lost when the markers apparently ended and nightfall was approaching.

The hikers were airlifted one at a time to a staging area at the radio-controlled airplane park off Kapaa Quarry Road. Both declined medical treatment.
