A 40-year-old diver was unconscious when he was recovered from waters off Kaena Point just before noon Friday.
The man was free-diving and spear-fishing with a friend when he got into trouble. The friend spotted him on the ocean floor in about 60 feet of water, said fire Capt. Terry Seelig.
Ocean Safety Operations Chief Jim Howe said the man was about 200 yards offshore from a point three-quarters of a mile from the end of the paved road on the Waianae side of Kaena Point State Park.
Howe described Friday's ocean conditions as windy and choppy.
Officials said the friend retrieved the man and swam him to the rocky shore, where Ocean Safety personnel tried to resuscitate him.
The Fire Department helicopter airlifted the man to Keawaula Bay, where he was taken by ambulance in critical condition to a hospital, an Emergency Medical Services supervisor said.
A robber grabbed a man's gold chain Thursday and punched him in the face in Waipahu.
Police said a 56-year-old man was coming out of Times Super Market at about 4:50 p.m. when an unknown man walked up, took his gold chain and punched him twice in the face.
The attacker ran off. Police opened a robbery case.
Firefighters rescued a woman in her 30s Thursday after she hurt her foot while hiking on Maunawili Falls Trail in Kailua.
The Kaneohe woman apparently slipped at about 2:20 p.m., said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig. Her injury prevented her from walking, and her companions called for help, Seelig said.
Firefighters hiked in and moved her to an area where she could be picked up by a Fire Department helicopter.
The woman was airlifted to Maunawili Valley Neighborhood Park and transferred to paramedics at about 3:30 p.m.
