Maui shores closed after shark biting

A 1-mile stretch of beach on Maui was closed Saturday afternoon after a woman was bitten by a shark while paddling into shore.

The 51-year-old tourist from California suffered puncture wounds to her right inner thigh and cuts to her hand.

She estimated the shark to be 10 to 12 feet long.

She was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.

The Maui Fire Department said the incident happened about 3:56 p.m., when the victim was paddling to shore with her husband. Authorities closed a stretch of shoreline from Maluaka Beach to Changs Beach near Makena Landing.

Tourist couple adrift on raft are rescued

Maui fire personnel rescued a visiting couple who were adrift on an inflatable raft two miles off Maalaea on Saturday afternoon.

Ocean Safety Rescue craft 6 with a firefighter on board found the couple two miles off Haycraft Beach Park and brought them safely to shore, the fire department said.

The fire department was alerted at 1:20 p.m.

The fire spokesman said he had no information on where the couple was from.

Woman arrested in alleged truck attack

Maui police arrested a 36-year-old woman who allegedly tried to run over a man with a pickup truck Thursday in a Wailuku parking lot.

Police received a call of a fight at 215 N. Market St. about 4 p.m. Witnesses told police the argument began in an apartment unit and moved to the parking lot, where the suspect tried to run over the man.

The man jumped onto the hood of the pickup truck, breaking the windshield and suffering minor injuries and pain to his head and shoulders, police said.

The woman also drove the truck into the man's compact sedan, causing an estimated $3,000 in damage.

Police said the argument started when the man threatened to end the relationship. Bail for the woman was set at $51,000.
