Man accused of burglary during tsunami
Hawaii County police arrested a 28-year-old Keaukaha man Thursday for allegedly burglarizing a Keaukaha home during the tsunami evacuation Oct. 27.
Police arrested the man on suspicion of burglary of a dwelling during a civil defense emergency, which is a Class A felony punishable by 20 years in prison. He is being held pending further investigation.
Eight Keaukaha homes on Kalanianaole Avenue were burglarized after residents were told to leave because of the tsunami threat, police said.
Residents reported that burglars stole items ranging from women's underwear and swimsuits to chain saws and weed whackers.
Police said small items, including jewelry and cash, were also taken.
