~~<p>The people of Hawaii should be very proud that the East-West Center &mdash; one of the most important peace-generating institutions in the world &mdash; is located in Hawaii.</p>
<p>The mission of the center is to promote &quot;better relations and understanding among the people and nations of the United States, Asia and the Pacific through cooperative study, research and dialogue.&quot; This is not mere lip service, but a daring call to advance peace, democracy and justice throughout the region.</p>
