The state plans to create a fourth "transition" lane to ease morning westbound traffic in the congested Punahou-Makiki freeway corridor

~~<p>The state is seeking federal approval to restripe part of the H-1 freeway to add a fourth &quot;transition&quot; westbound lane between Punahou Street and Pali Highway in hopes of resolving a morning rush-hour bottleneck in one of the state's most congested corridors.</p>
<p>Currently, to reduce the backup on the H-1 freeway leading to the Vineyard Boulevard offramp, traffic barriers are placed to prevent cars on the Lunalilo Street onramp from entering the freeway during the morning rush hour. Those diverted cars enter the freeway via the Pali onramp.</p>
