The cuts will cause chaos for thousands of students and their families, officials say

~~<p>Nearly 2,400 students statewide will no longer be offered school bus service in the coming school year &mdash; the first major cut to a service with a price tag that has ballooned in recent years.</p>
<p>The announcement Saturday came a month before most public schools start and after a painstaking process by the Department of Education over the past several months to tackle a $17 million shortfall for student transportation.</p>
