~~<p><strong>QUESTION:</strong> I hear trucks many times a day using &ldquo;Jake brakes&rdquo; on Kamehameha Highway in Kaaawa, near the elementary school, to slow down. Are jake brakes legal in Hawaii?</p>
<p><strong>ANSWER:</strong> There are no state laws prohibiting or restricting the use of compression release engine brakes &mdash; commonly referred to as &ldquo;Jake brakes&rdquo; &mdash; according to the state Department of Transportation&rsquo;s Motor Vehicle Safety Office. This type of brake is typically installed in large diesel engine vehicles.</p>
