Second phase works at Maui wind project

~~<p>The second phase of Maui's Kahe&shy;awa wind energy proj&shy;ect began commercial operations Thursday with a battery storage system that will allow Maui Electric Co. to absorb a higher share of intermittent wind power into the relatively small island electrical grid.</p>
<p>The 21 megawatts of generating capacity at Kahe&shy;awa II, combined with the 30 megawatts at Kahe&shy;awa I, will generate enough energy to power an estimated 18,700 Maui homes annually, according to First Wind LLC, which developed the proj&shy;ects. MECO will buy the electricity from First Wind at a set price over 20 years.</p>
