Family vows to fight for land

The city is evicting a Waikane ohana but is letting them stay six months rent-free before they must relocate

~~<p>City officials will let a Wai&shy;kane family continue to live rent-free on a 2.5-acre, oceanview parcel for another 90 days after the family discovered they had been living illegally on the property for the past 23 years.</p>
<p>The unusual situation began when the administration of Mayor Jeremy Harris used city and federal money in 1996 to buy more than 40 acres along Kamehameha Highway &quot;to preserve and protect the existing scenic qualities and the natural resources and rural character of these coastal lands,&quot; said Michael Hansen, current director of the city Department of Budget and Fiscal Services.</p>
