~~<p>The Waikiki Natatorium was built in 1927 as a living memorial to all those from Hawaii who served in the First World War.</p>
<p>In the opening ceremonies on Aug. 24, 1927, local Olympic gold medal holder Duke Kahanamoku made the first swim (it was his 37th birthday).</p>
