Assistant Akana returns to bench

~~<div>Assistant basketball coach Brandyn Akana will return to the University of Hawaii&rsquo;s bench tonight after missing the past four games due to an undisclosed &ldquo;personnel matter,&rdquo; the school said.</div>

<div>Athletic director Ben Jay said Wednesday the situation involved &ldquo;personnel actions&rdquo; and has been in the hands of the school&rsquo;s Office of Human Resources. Jay declined additional comment.</div>

<div>Head coach Gib Arnold said Akana&rsquo;s absence was &ldquo;absolutely nothing&rdquo; and referred questions to Jay. When asked if Akana would be on the team&rsquo;s bench for tonight&rsquo;s game against UC Santa Barbara, Arnold affirmed he would be.</div>

<div>Akana is in his fourth season as a UH assistant after spending nine years at Brigham Young-Hawaii.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Akana is listed as the team&rsquo;s recruiting coordinator but also works with guards, handles community relations and assists in scouting.</div>

<div>He is believed to have a salary of more than $80,000. UH officials said he was still being paid by the school.</div>

<div>Akana is normally on the team&rsquo;s bench during games except when he&rsquo;s away recruiting. Akana was not on the team&rsquo;s bench the past two home games or the previous two road games. He returned to practice Wednesday.&nbsp;</div>~~
