A new test and more class time mark new school year

A federal assessment of students will be given in Department of Education facilities

~~<p>A new academic year that includes increased classroom time and assessments on a new national test aligned to more rigorous curriculum standards greets the more than 185,000 isle public school students returning to school Friday.</p>
<p>With a full year of learning under the Common Core standards behind them, students this year will be taking the Smarter Balance Assessment, which replaces the Hawaii State Assessment in English language arts and math for grades 3 to 8 and grade 11.</p>
