Atlas Construction

By Maria Kanai

It’s an exciting year for Atlas Construction, a family-run homebuilding company that has been voted first place as “Hawaii’s Best” contractor the past five years in a row in Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s People’s Choice Awards for quality work and dedicated customer service. Together with the launch of a new brand campaign, the company is proud to announce its first annual Atlas Construction Home and Garden Show, taking place May 4-6.

Held at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center’s Exhibition Hall, the show will offer hundreds of vendors and exhibits to attendees, specializing in home building and renovation work in kitchens, baths, backyards, lawns, gardens and more. There also will be home improvement workshops, demos and — another incentive to attend — a chance to win a remodeled kitchen and bath. Drawings and prizes will be offered all weekend. Prices are $4 for general admission, $3 for seniors and military, and free for keiki ages 12 years old and younger.

“Here at Atlas Construction, we’re all about family,” says vice president Rodney Kim. “As a family-run business made up of four generations, we want to make sure our company supports the entire ohana, which is why the expo will also offer plenty of entertainment for the whole family, including a fun keiki zone!”

This family-centric focus has been a large part of the company culture and is highlighted in its new brand campaign this year. “We came up with a new tag line, ‘Home AT LASt!,’” says Kim. “If you look closely, our name ‘ATLAS’ is in this phrase! The satisfying feeling of arriving home where there is comfort and security is something we offer an Atlas Construction customer.”

Atlas Construction specializes in working as a contractor for Hawaii homes, offering the best businesses in the local workforce that can put together good homes in the community. Whether it’s a new home build from ground up, kitchen renovation or a grand expansion, there’s a reason why locals choose Atlas Construction. “We make sure that customers are treated like family, with integrity, honesty and respect,” says Kim.

Communication is key, which is why Kim makes sure to explain the whole process from step one. First, he’ll help customers figure out a realistic and clear budget. After a design consultation — visiting the site and making sure that the construction would be feasible — he and his staff will sit down with clients to set up a firm budget and a monthly payment plan. After the design consultation and budgeting, Kim and his staff will assist with drafting and design — where designs will be put on paper. During this process, he also will call in other contractors. For example, in Hawaii, termites are a common setback. If this is an issue, Kim will refer the client to a trusted and reliable termite inspector — one of many local businesses on their referral list.

Since Atlas Construction has 40 to 45 projects a year, and after being in business for four generations, they know that relationships are key. “Whether it’s a soil engineer, a realtor or a special management area contact, we pride ourselves with our list of reliable specialists,” says Kim.

Throughout this process, Atlas recommends attending its open houses, which take place once a month. Clients will be able to see an actual project that has been completed by Atlas Construction — you can learn more about future open houses on ads in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser newspaper or the company’s online website and social media.

Another good resource would be attending the company’s monthly informational building seminars. The seminars are free and open to the public, and potential clients can learn about the different steps of putting together a budget, having site visits, getting permits and more.

Finally, the fourth step would be the actual completion of the project’s construction documents, which include gathering appropriate documents such as building permits from the county’s Building Division.

The upcoming expo also will be a great resource. For more information on the event, call 554-6615. “Please join us as we together work on our mission of building quality homes in Hawaii,” Kim shares. “We look forward to meeting you and helping you with your next home project!”
