Hawaii finishes 61st in Director's Cup

The University of Hawaii athletics finished 61st in the annual Learfield Sports Director's Cup standings, matching its second-best finish in 17 years.

The competition purports to measure overall strength of 276 schools based upon the finishes of up to 20 teams, 10 men's and 10 women's.

UH earned 326 points, ranking it second among the nine Western Athletic Conference schools behind Boise State's 351.

UH's highest finish was 53rd in 2007-'08. It was also 61st in 2005-'06.

Stanford, Florida, Virginia, UCLA and Florida State topped the standings.


Stanley leads US to volleyball win

Hawaii's Clay Stanley put down a team-high 16 kills to help the U.S. men's national volleyball team outlast host Egypt in an FIVB World League match yesterday in Cairo.

Stanley added an ace as the Americans won, 20-25, 31-29, 25-17, 21-25, 15-12 to improve to 6-3 in pool play.

Former Warrior Alfee Reft, a reserve libero, did not play yesterday.


Baseball state champions crowned

The Ewa/Ewa Beach Hurricanes defeated Waianae 5-4, in the championship round of the State Pony Bronco League.

The Hurricanes, who went undefeated in the 12-13 age tournament, will travel to Whittier, Calif., for the zone tournament from July 29-Aug. 1.

Also, Waianae defeated Aiea to win the Pony Mustang Division championship.

Waianae will represent Hawaii in the Pony Mustang Division for zone play in California as well.
