POSTED:

Kauai High senior Kelli Oride and Kamehameha-Maui's Aaron Kunitomo went overtime yesterday to win first-round matches at the U.S. Junior Championships.

At the 62nd U.S. Girls' Junior, Oride needed one extra hole to beat Collins Bradshaw of South Carolina. Oride was 3 up after 14 holes, but Bradshaw played the final four holes in 2 under to tie it. Oride won with par on the 19th at The Country Club of North Carolina. She plays medalist Danielle Kang today.

At the 63rd U.S. Junior Amateur in Michigan, Kunitomo birdied the 20th hole to beat fourth-seeded Canadian Wilson Bateman. Kunitomo made a two on the 16th hole to tie it and both matched scores to force overtime.

Kunitomo plays Scott Wolfes, of Georgia, today at Egypt Valley Country Club.

Justin Keiley, from Haiku, fell in the first round to South Carolina's Stephen Behr, 2 and 1.

WHITE IN SECOND

Honolulu's Alexandra White shot an even-par 72 yesterday in the second round of the Hilton Head Junior All-Star, on the South Course at Berkeley Hall Club in South Carolina. She is in second place, five strokes off the lead, going into today's final round. The tournament is one of 10 in the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series, designed for juniors ages 12-15 to prepare them for AJGA open events.

Hall sets record

Gavin Hall's round of 10-under-par 62 Tuesday was a record for the U.S. Junior, and tied with a few familiar names for second-best ever in a USGA event. Billy Horschel shot a 60 in the 2006 U.S. Amateur. Hall, who is 15, tied Loren Roberts (2004 U.S. Senior Open), the LPGA's Christina Kim (2001 U.S. Girls' Junior) and former Hilo resident Kimberly Kim (2007 U.S. Girls' Junior).
