Lili'uokalani races in Kailua-Kona

Billed as the world's largest long-distance canoe race, the 39th Queen Lili'uokalani Race opens three days of competition tomorrow in Kailua-Kona.

More than 3,000 outrigger canoe paddlers from Hawaii, the mainland and around the world are expected to vie in six-man, 12-man, OC-1 and OC-2 divisions as well as stand-up paddleboards.

New this year is Monday's Ali'i Challenge, a 17.5-mile mixed race with six women and six men. The all-woman crews will paddle from Kailua Pier with the men's crews making open-water changes halfway through the course. The finish is at the Kona Village beach.

Cliff-diving finale in Hilo

England's Gary Hunt will try to earn his first championship when the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series makes its final tour stop next week in Hilo.

Hunt, last year's runner-up, is one of 10 divers competing off Kawainui Falls on Sept. 12. The Big Island is the last meet in the series, which included stops in France, Mexico, Norway, Italy and Switzerland.

Noseriding surf contest at Queen's

The 13th Walk On Water Noseriding Championship, a longboard contest that focuses on timed noseriding, is set for Sept. 11 and 12 at Queen's Beach.

The event is open to amateur longboarders with various age and special divisions.

Proceeds go to HOPE INC., a local non-profit charitable organization dedicated to serving children and families involved in foster care and adoption.

Softball for the serious

Kamikaze Softball is seeking 16-and-under and 18-and-under players to travel to showcase tournaments.

Both teams will play in the Fireworks (Colo.) and the 16s will also will play in the Champions Cup (Calif.).
