Corpuz fourth at AJGA event

Punahou seventh-grader Allisen Corpuz struggled on her final nine, but still tied for fourth at the AJGA Girls Junior on Monday.

Corpuz was the only 12-year-old at the invitational, played at Furman Golf Course in South Carolina. She opened with consecutive rounds of 72, then shot 79.

Corpuz and Honolulu's Alex White will compete in the AJGA's Montverde Academy Junior All-Star Invitational in October in Florida. White, a 15-year-old who is home-schooled, was invited after winning the AJGA Junior All-Star at Penn State in July.

She also won an AJGA Qualifier in Virginia last month and was second at the AJGA Hilton Head Junior All-Star in South Carolina. During her three-week trip, White earned six AJGA exemptions and two performance stars for 2011.

Last week in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., 'Iolani junior Lorens Chan tied for 13th at the Junior Players Championship. The AJGA invitational had a field of 78 from 20 states and 13 foreign countries. Chan shot 75-72-76 on the 7,215-yard TPC Sawgrass layout.

Corpuz is playing in this weekend's Hawaii State Junior Golf Association Mixed Team Championship at Kauai Lagoons. The event features two-person teams with a boy and a girl between the ages of 13 and 18. First-round format is four-ball stroke play, followed by alternate-shot the second day.

The Mixed Team Championship is designed to help prepare Hawaii Team members for a similar Ryder Cup format event against the top junior golfers from Japan in the fourth annual Asia Pacific Junior Cup, Nov. 11-14, at Waikoloa Kings' Course on the Big Island.
