The U.S. Department of Justice and the County of Kauai received a stipulation yesterday from Magistrate Judge Leslie E. Kobayashi that will allow a night high school football game next Saturday at Vidinha Stadium. The starting time for the Division II playoff game is 4:30 p.m.

Night games were disallowed on Kauai starting on Sept. 9 to avoid seabirds grounding themselves into the lights above the stadium on evenings when there is no moon. The amendment was allowed after a request from the Hawaii High School Athletic Association to hold a championship playoff game on Kauai.

"The additional night game is a testament to the ongoing relationship between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Justice Department and the county in protecting our native seabirds," Parks and Recreation Director Lenny Rapozo said in a release. "We would like to thank them for their understanding and consideration in agreeing to the additional night game."
