Vulcans' Hurley tops PacWest team

Hawaii-Hilo middle blocker Hillary-Lucy Hurley was named the Pacific West Conference women's volleyball player of the year yesterday.

Hurley was among five players from Hawaii schools named to the All-PacWest first team. She was joined by HPU's Kelly Balanay and Kyra Pelayo, who was also the libero of the year. BYU-Hawaii's Losaline Faka'osi and Lauren Hagemeyer were first-team selections and Wilfred Navalta earned coach of the year honors after leading the Seasiders to the PacWest title and a berth in the NCAA Division II tournament.

UH-Hilo's Rachel Thornquist was named newcomer of the year.

Named to the second team were HPU's Natasha Bell, UH-Hilo's Kawena Cubi-Otineru and Katie Swenson and BYUH's Nobuko Kotoyori. Third-team selections included Chaminade's Tatiana Alvino, HPU's Pihana Kea, BYUH's Lauren Miller and UH-Hilo's Leilani Ramsey.

 

Sea Warriors fall to Otters

Hawaii Pacific University's first road game of the season resulted in a 71-49 women's basketball loss to Cal State Monterey Bay yesterday in Seaside, Calif.

Jazzmin Awa-Williams and Skye Savini both finished with 12 points for the Sea Warriors (1-1).

 

Aspnaes leads cross country awards

Hawaii Pacific University junior Frida Aspnaes was named the Pacific West Conference women's cross country runner of the year and newcomer of the year yesterday.

Aspnaes was joined on the first team by teammate Kim Kuhnert and BYU-Hawaii's Lacey (Johnson) Krout, Katherine Buxton, Chanda Romney (also the freshman of the year), Amanda Wilson and Lacee Kurtz. Named to the second team were BYUH's Heather Brown and Kelsey Elder, UH-Hilo's Kirsten Andrew and Kaylene Peric and Chaminade's Ashlie Salas-Selem and Shannon Whener.

BYUH's Norman Kaluhiokalani won his third straight coach of the year award.

 

Ludvigsen named top freshman

HPU's Anders Ludvigsen was named the PacWest men's cross country freshman of the year. BYUH's Thomas Rivers Puzey, Matthew Gulden and Matthew Roberts also made the first team. The second team included BYUH's Luke Graesser, Brandon Krout, Vicente Herrera and Justin Royer, Chaminade's Garrett Prinslow and UH-Hilo's Keoni Ucker. Norman Kaluhiokalani was named coach of the year.
