WAC reminds Hawaii of no-subsidy offer

By Ferd Lewis

The Western Athletic Conference pressed its interest in retaining the University of Hawaii as a member yesterday but the renewed proposal produced no apparent change in the Hawaii's plans to pursue Mountain West membership.

WAC commissioner Karl Benson and UH athletic director Jim Donovan met at the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas before the Rainbow Wahine's appearance there in the WAC volleyball tournament.

Donovan said Benson "reiterated his position that they have an offer on the table to us to be a football-only member of the WAC and reminded me there would be no travel subsidies (sought)."

Donovan said, "I told him I would share that with the members of our leadership team."

Donovan said he "made some calls" but declined additional comment.

Benson declined immediate comment.

UH president M.R.C. Greenwood was traveling and not immediately available for comment.

UH has been in discussion with the MWC about becoming a football-only member and placing other sports teams in the Big West Conference beginning in 2012-13.

UH is expected to pay travel subsidies to both the MWC and Big West as a condition of admission.
